Ugly suit
In finance, most of the management positions are occupied by men. Old men in ugly suits. I don't know why the finance industry is so infected by such fashion sense, when every single company in the square mile has a strict dress code:
"Skirts no shorter than knee length", "Denim trousers not allowed", "no sleeve-less tops"... What about "no ill-fitting trousers that are clenched in your buttocks" or "no ties shorter than 20cm" or why not (for men) "no shirts with the level of transparency that nipples and chest hair are visible".
It seems most of the restrictions in the dress code are directed towards women. However, I would say that women, in most cases, are far better dressers than men. So why do so many men in finance dress poorly? I do think many of them try to look, good, or more importantly - POWERFUL, but it just doesn't work - not always anyways.
I think women need to set the standard. We need more women in the board rooms and management positions - they will certainly shape it up. Obviously that's not the most important reason they need to be there. I think the overwhelming amount of ugly suits in finance is just another symptom of the inequality of the business... There are so few women in the top. Hopefully that will change soon!
Then we will show the world that management skills CAN be combined with good fashion sense!
*please note that I am aware that there are good exceptions to my generalisations....

Tihi!
I agree! I wondered how come I wasn't allowed to wear jeans to work in Hong Kong, when one of the local employees wore a t-shirt that said "pussy". ;)
ReplyDeleteTack Paulina! Du rockar fett!!!
ReplyDeleteMioli honey, you have a key ring that is quite obscene. Did you show your colleagues that one? ;-)
Well if you ask me from a mans perspective.
ReplyDeleteI work in finance myself, i have to wear a suit to work 4 days a week. I wear perfectly fitted suits but youre right most men buy ready made suits and suits that are ready made generally dont have the best fits! So now comes in the question of money: If you want the best fitted suits or even fitted suits which are well made you have to go to an anove standard brand which is expensive. So when men are faced with the idea of spending $2000 on a ready made suit from a good brand vs a $300 suit in cheap stores, theyll go with the $300 suit and buy 5 of those! vs buying 1 of them for $2000.. you get the point..
Secondly, talking about codes that only women have and men dont lets leave the world of finance and talk about other occasions one must conform to these standards. Goto these so called formal restaurants & casinos in Europe & USA - what do you see ! All men looking like theyre wearing a uniform - the same ugly drab dull looking suits but the women on the other hand can wear anything from yellows to reds to oranges either dresses skirts or anything and it all works, so there isnt really a known type of a "formal" dress code for women - they musnt wear jeans thats all..
Now talking about men, can we wear colorful full sleeve T shirts and designer jeans or something that flatters the body and makes us look good, ---- NO ! Why is that? Ever think about it? Everybody from a bus driver to a billionaire in a Casino or any of these so called formal venues would look the same in a suit.. so hows this flattering to anyone, i dont understand..
